Why Is Rabbi Rappaport Called Upon So Often to Revise Hospital Circumcisions?

Jun 14, 2024 | Circumcision, General

You’re a new parent, filled with joy and excitement, but also facing the daunting task of ensuring your baby receives the best care possible.

Among the many decisions, you might opt for a hospital circumcision, trusting that the procedure will be straightforward and routine.

But what happens when things don’t go as planned?

Enter Rabbi Rappaport, the Expert Mohel frequently called upon to correct hospital circumcisions that ‘don’t look right’!

Why Are Hospital Circumcisions Problematic?

Hospital circumcisions frequently fall short of expectations.

Statistics reveal a concerning trend: out of every 10 hospital circumcisions, only three may be considered good, with none being perfect.

Two out of 10 are passable and require no revision, but the remaining 50% should be revised.

Why is that the case?

6 Common Issues with Hospital Circumcisions

The conservative approach of the medical community is the primary factor contributing to the need for circumcision revisions.

Most physicians perform a dorsal slit while being exceedingly cautious about how much foreskin they remove. They worry that removing ‘too much’ foreskin will result in an unappealing aesthetic. However, they’re often unaware of the right amount of foreskin to remove.

A true circumcision requires the removal of all foreskin covering the corona. Anything less, and the result won’t be aesthetically pleasing. As the baby grows and gains weight, any extra skin left from the circumcision will become more pronounced.

Both the foreskin and the thinner mucus membrane underneath need to be removed to prevent the baby from being left with redundant skin.

Other potential issues include conditions such as phimosis, which makes the foreskin hard to retract, and hydrocele, where water in the scrotum pulls the glans down, requiring precise foreskin removal to prevent retraction.

Suppose the frenulum—which connects the bottom of the corona to the shaft—is not disadhered correctly. In that case, it may cause significant discomfort later in life.

In many hospitals, residents often perform circumcisions without the parents present. They frequently have limited experience, having only performed a few circumcisions during medical school.

Using devices like Gomco and Plastibell can also lead to suboptimal results, as these tools don’t support a perfect circumcision procedure.

What Makes Rabbi Rappaport the Preferred Choice for Circumcision Revisions?

What Makes Rabbi Rappaport the Preferred Choice for Circumcision Revisions

Rabbi Avraham Rappaport’s extensive qualifications make him a highly sought-after expert circumcision revisionist.

His journey began with his ordination as a Rabbi through the Chief Rabbinate of the State of Israel, establishing a solid religious and ceremonial expertise foundation. Rabbi Rappaport also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Talmudic Law from the Ner Israel Rabbinical College of Baltimore, underscoring his deep understanding of Jewish law and traditions related to Bris Milah.

Rabbi Rappaport works with leading pediatricians and urologists at local hospitals and surgical centers, ensuring his techniques are continually refined and up-to-date. His energetic personality and professional expertise make each circumcision a heartwarming and meaningful experience for all the families he serves!

How Does Rabbi Rappaport’s Technique Differ from Standard Hospital Procedures?

Rabbi Rappaport’s approach to circumcision significantly differs from standard hospital procedures, offering a more precise and compassionate experience.

One key difference is his holistic and traditional method, which redefines the Bris Milah experience. Rabbi Rappaport ensures the procedure is swift and efficient, taking 30 seconds, compared to the considerably longer hospital methods.

Throughout the procedure, Rabbi Rappaport holds the baby, ensuring the infant feels comforted and secure. This personal touch contrasts sharply with the often impersonal hospital settings, where parents are typically not allowed to be present during the procedure.

He follows the golden rule of removing the perfect amount of foreskin and underlying mucus membrane according to the baby’s anatomy.

If a situation requires either removing slightly more or slightly less foreskin, an expert should understand and practice always being cautious and actually removing slightly more. It may take a few extra days (at most) to heal, but it ensures no redundant foreskin is left. This is especially important for larger or older babies.

This approach addresses a common issue with hospital circumcisions where only a bit of the foreskin is removed, leading to aesthetic and functional concerns.

How Does Rabbi Rappaport Approach Hospital Circumcision Revisions?

Two types of circumcision revision procedures

Rabbi Rappaport’s approach to hospital circumcision revisions is grounded in the principle,

‘What would I do if it were my son?’

This personalized and compassionate perspective guides his meticulous revision process. For infants up to nine months old, Rabbi Rappaport often recommends revisions without anesthesia to minimize the risks and discomfort associated with anesthetic use.

Rabbi Rappaport provides two main types of circumcision revisions:

  1. Full revisions are comprehensive procedures that correct significant issues from the initial circumcision, ensuring the removal of all excess foreskin and addressing any anatomical concerns.
  2. Partial revisions involve less extensive corrections, such as disadhering skin bridges or correcting minor asymmetries.

Rabbi Rappaport does not charge for revision consultations, whether in person or online, making it accessible for families to seek the help they need.

What Steps Should Parents Take if Their Babies Need a Circumcision Revision?

Parents must recognize the signs that a circumcision needs revision.

Track any concerns you notice, such as uneven skin, improper healing, or skin bridges. If possible, document these issues with photos.

One of the most common issues is lopsidedness, where one side of the circumcision is higher than the other. This issue often occurs when the practitioner fails to separate the adhesion around the rim of the corona. If the mucus membrane is allowed to adhere, it may cause painful urination or erections later in life.

Parents should not feel embarrassed or hesitant to seek help if they notice issues with their child’s circumcision. Rabbi Rappaport emphasizes that these problems will not be resolved without professional intervention.

‘My experience with Rabbi Rapapport was nothing short of flawless. He came and performed the procedure on my son in the comfort of our own home. The actual procedure took about 15-20 seconds and my boy was calm and in his mother’s arms immediately after. I was nervous about it in general with all the horror stories of little boys going through this in the hospital and I can say it was quite the opposite. Rabbi is very comforting and walks you clearly through the after care procedures and everything else you need to know. Rabbi’s skill, experience, and knowledge is superb and I would HIGHLY recommend him for circumcision.’ — Adam A. Wawrzynski.
